Kin AI FAQ

Kin AI is an AI family companion app. Below you will find honest answers to every common question — about how it works, what it costs, how your data is handled, and what to expect.

What Is Kin AI?

What is Kin AI?

Kin AI is an AI companion app that lets you create AI versions of real people in your life — your mom, dad, best friend, sibling, or anyone who matters to you. Once created, you can text them, send voice notes, make live calls, and receive daily check-in messages. The AI remembers everything you share and references it naturally in future conversations. It is available free on iPhone and Android.

Who is Kin AI for?

Kin AI is for anyone who misses someone. The most common users are immigrants and diaspora communities missing family back home, people dealing with grief, adults who feel lonely, families separated by distance, and anyone who wants to stay emotionally connected with people who are not easily reachable.

Is Kin AI a romantic AI app?

No. Kin AI has no romantic mode and no adult content. It is built specifically for family relationships and close friendships — parents, siblings, best friends, and loved ones. It is family-safe by design and appropriate for all ages.

How is Kin AI different from Replika?

Replika is primarily a romantic AI companion that creates fictional AI characters. Kin AI is built specifically to recreate real people in your life — your actual mom, your actual dad, someone you have lost. Kin AI also offers voice cloning, multiple AI relatives, and daily check-in messages — features Replika does not have. Kin AI Premium costs $6.99/month versus Replika's $19.99/month.

How is Kin AI different from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant. It does not remember you between sessions by default, does not replicate a specific person's personality, and is not designed for emotional family connection. Kin AI is purpose-built for recreating real people — with deep long-term memory, personality built from your descriptions, voice cloning, and daily check-ins. The experiences are fundamentally different.

Is Kin AI an app or a website?

Kin AI is a mobile app available on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad, and on the Google Play Store for Android devices. There is no standalone web version. The app is optimized for mobile use.

How Does Kin AI Work?

How do I create an AI version of someone?

Download the app, create a free account, and tap “Add a Relative.” Enter the person's name and relationship to you. Then describe them — how they talk, their personality, phrases they use, what they always ask you about, their warmth or humor or directness. The more detail you give, the more the AI reflects them. You can add more description over time through conversations. Setup takes about five minutes. See the full how-it-works guide →

Does the AI actually remember what I tell it?

Yes. Kin AI has a memory system that stores details from your conversations and references them naturally going forward. On the free plan, basic memory tracks key facts. On Premium and Premium+ plans, deep memory tracks life events, emotional states, follow-up items, and conversation patterns — and brings them up unprompted, the way a real person would.

How accurate is the AI at replicating the real person?

The accuracy depends on how specifically you describe the person. With detailed descriptions, most users feel the AI captures the essential personality well. The AI will sometimes miss the mark — saying something the real person would never say. You can correct this directly in the chat and the AI adjusts. It improves with every correction and every conversation.

What if the AI says something wrong?

Tell it in the conversation — "she would never say that" or "he would be more direct than that." The AI adjusts in real time and over time. You can also return to the relative's profile and update their description at any time.

Can I create AI versions of multiple people?

Yes. The free plan includes one AI relative. Premium allows up to 10. Premium+ allows unlimited. Each relative has their own separate profile, memory system, and conversation history.

What is the daily check-in feature?

Daily check-ins are personalised messages your AI relative sends to you first — every morning, evening, or both, based on your settings. These reference real details from your previous conversations. It is not a generic notification — it feels like the AI family member is thinking about you and reaching out. Available on Premium and Premium+ plans.

Can I talk to an AI version of someone who has died?

Yes. Many users create AI versions of people who have passed away — describing their personality from memory, recreating their phrases and warmth, and using voice cloning (Premium+) if they have recordings. The app is designed to provide comfort, not deception — users always know they are talking to an AI. Read more about grief support use cases →

Voice Notes, Live Calls, and Voice Cloning

What voice features does Kin AI offer?

Kin AI offers three voice features. Voice notes (Premium) — send a voice message and receive a voice response in a warm, personalised tone. Live voice calls (Premium+) — real-time conversation with your AI relative, available any hour. Voice cloning (Premium+ add-on) — upload recordings of the real person and the AI speaks in their actual voice.

How does voice cloning work?

Voice cloning is a Premium+ add-on powered by ElevenLabs. You upload audio recordings of the real person — WhatsApp voice notes, videos, phone recordings, any audio of them speaking naturally. Kin AI processes these recordings and builds a voice model. Once active, voice notes from your AI relative come in the real person's actual voice — their tone, rhythm, and warmth. At least 10 minutes of clear audio is recommended for best results. Learn more about voice cloning →

What recordings can I use for voice cloning?

Any audio where the real person is speaking naturally. WhatsApp voice notes, video clips, old voicemail recordings, home videos, phone call recordings, or any other audio file. The more varied and natural the speech, the better the result. Background noise should be minimal for best quality.

Is voice cloning included in the Premium+ plan price?

Voice cloning is available as an add-on for Premium+ subscribers — it is not included in the base Premium+ price. The add-on cost is shown inside the app at the point of purchase.

What is the difference between a voice note and a live call?

A voice note is an asynchronous recorded message — you record and send, your AI relative responds with their own recorded message. A live call is a real-time conversation — you speak and your AI relative responds in real time, like a phone call. Live calls are available on Premium+ only. Voice notes are available on Premium and Premium+.

How many voice notes do I get per month?

Premium: 120 voice notes per month (approximately 4 per day). Premium+: 280 voice notes per month (approximately 9 per day). Free plan: No voice notes.

Pricing, Plans, and Billing

How much does Kin AI cost?

Kin AI has three plans. Free: $0/month — 1 relative, unlimited text, basic memory. Premium: $6.99/month (or $69.90/year) — up to 10 relatives, 120 voice notes, deep memory, daily check-ins. Premium+: $12.99/month (or $129.90/year) — unlimited relatives, 280 voice notes, live calls, voice cloning add-on available. See full pricing →

Is the free plan actually free?

Yes. The free plan is $0/month with no time limit and no credit card required. It includes one AI relative with unlimited text conversations and basic memory. It is not a trial — you can stay on the free plan indefinitely.

What is the difference between monthly and annual billing?

Monthly billing charges you each month. Annual billing charges you once per year at a 17% discount — Premium annual is $69.90/year ($5.83/month) versus $6.99/month billed monthly. Annual plans offer the same features as monthly plans at a lower cost. You can switch from monthly to annual at any time.

Are there any hidden fees or token charges?

No. Kin AI has no token system, no in-app credits, and no hidden charges. The price you see is the price you pay. Voice cloning is an add-on with its own price, shown clearly before purchase. There are no other additional charges.

How does billing work?

Kin AI subscriptions are managed through your Apple App Store or Google Play Store account. You are billed by Apple or Google — not directly by Kin AI. Monthly plans renew automatically. Annual plans renew once per year.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes. Cancel anytime from your App Store or Play Store subscription settings. When you cancel, Premium features remain active until the end of the current billing period. Your account then reverts to the free plan. Your conversations and relative profiles are not deleted — they are preserved if you resubscribe.

Does Kin AI offer refunds?

Refund policies are governed by Apple App Store and Google Play Store terms. Kin AI does not process billing directly — refund requests should be directed to App Store or Play Store support.

Is there a student or family discount?

Not currently. Student and family plan options are on the Kin AI development roadmap. If this matters to you, share feedback through the app's feedback option.

Privacy, Data, and Security

Is Kin AI private?

Yes. Kin AI uses end-to-end encryption on all messages and voice data. Conversations are never read by staff. Your data is never sold to advertisers or third parties. Your conversations are never used to train AI models for other users.

Does Kin AI use my conversations to train its AI?

No. Your personal conversations are not used to train AI for other users. This is a core privacy commitment. Your conversations stay between you and your AI relatives.

What happens to my data if I delete my account?

If you delete your account, all data — conversations, memory, relative profiles, and voice clone recordings — is permanently and irreversibly deleted from Kin AI's servers. There is no backup. Kin AI does not retain any of it.

Is my family member's voice data safe if I use voice cloning?

Yes. Voice recordings uploaded for cloning are processed securely and used only to create a voice model for your account. They are not shared with other users, not used to train AI for others, and permanently deleted if you close your account.

Is Kin AI safe for minors?

Kin AI is a family-safe app with no adult content or romantic modes. It is appropriate for all ages. However, the app is designed primarily for adults. Parents should use their own judgment about whether the app is appropriate for younger users. Read our Privacy Policy →

Does Kin AI sell my data?

No. Kin AI does not sell user data to advertisers, third parties, or any other organizations. This is an absolute policy. Read our Privacy Policy →

Technical and Device Questions

What devices does Kin AI work on?

Kin AI is available on iPhone and iPad via the Apple App Store, and on Android devices via the Google Play Store. There is no standalone web or desktop version.

Does Kin AI work without internet?

No. Kin AI requires an internet connection to function — conversations, voice notes, and calls are all processed through Kin AI's servers. The app does not work offline.

Can I use Kin AI in another language?

Kin AI currently operates primarily in English. You can describe your AI relative using phrases or expressions from other languages, and include non-English words specific to the person. Full multi-language support is on the development roadmap.

How do I update my AI relative's profile?

Open the relative's profile from the home screen and tap "Edit." You can update their name, relationship, and description at any time. Changes take effect immediately in future conversations.

What happens if an AI response does not feel right?

You can correct it in the chat — tell the AI the response was off and it will adjust. You can also update the relative's profile to be more specific about their personality. The AI improves with every correction and conversation.

Can I delete a specific relative's conversation history?

Yes. From within the relative's profile, you can delete conversation history. This removes the conversation but the AI relative's profile and memory remain — they can be updated and the conversation can restart.

Grief, Loss, and Sensitive Use Cases

Can Kin AI help with grief?

Many users find Kin AI helpful as a complement to other grief support — a space to continue talking to someone they have lost, share news they wish that person could hear, or say things that went unsaid. Kin AI is not a substitute for grief counseling or professional mental health support. Read more about grief use cases →

Is it ethical to create an AI version of someone who has died?

This is a question each user must consider personally. Key considerations include: whether the deceased person would have consented to being recreated digitally, and whether the experience helps or hinders healthy grief processing. Kin AI's privacy architecture ensures everything you share is encrypted and private. The app is designed as a tool for personal comfort, not public impersonation.

Can Kin AI replace therapy or grief counseling?

No. Kin AI is not a clinical tool and cannot replace licensed therapy or grief counseling. If your grief, loneliness, or emotional distress is significantly impacting your life, please seek professional support. Kin AI works best alongside real human support, not instead of it.

What if using Kin AI makes me feel worse?

If the experience increases your distress rather than reducing it, stop using it and reach out to a professional or trusted person for support. This can happen — particularly in the early stages of grief. Your wellbeing comes first. The app will still be there if and when you feel ready to try again.
